Artist's statement / 작가노트 

“The extraordinary is never far away.” 

It lingers quietly at the edges of our everyday lives. Even the smallest things—fleeting moments, forgotten objects, habitual gestures—carry their own meanings and stories.

The reflection of light in a glass, a drifting petal in the wind, a stopped clock, loosened shoelaces, a half-eaten apple—each is complete in itself, quietly telling a tale. 

 We often overlook these traces of life. But when we pause, look closer, and reflect, we begin to encounter the hidden depth of our existence. Such moments, once noticed, nourish us and make our being more whole. 

 Through my work, I seek to reconstruct familiar scenes from daily life, embedding them with seeds of contemplation. With shifting tones of light and color, I aim to illuminate the subtle wonders hidden in the mundane, so that the ordinary may once again feel extraordinary. 

“특별함은 결코 먼 곳에 있지 않다.” 

 그것은 우리가 살아가는 일상의 경계마다, 언제나 우리 곁에 조용히 머문다. 비록 그것이 사소하게 느껴질지라도, 모든 사물과 행동, 사건, 그리고 순간 속에는 나름의 가치와 의미가 깃들어 있다.

 투명한 잔에 반사된 빛, 바람에 흩날리는 꽃잎 한 장, 멈춰버린 시계의 초침, 느슨해진 신발끈, 한 입 남은 사과 조각—이 모든 것은 그 자체로 하나의 완결된 이야기를 담고 있다. 우리는 일상 속에서 이러한 작은 흔적들을 너무 쉽게 지나치곤 한다. 

그러나 그 사소함 앞에 잠시 멈춰 서서, 눈을 맞추고, 천천히 들여다보며 사유할 때, 비로소 삶의 깊이와 마주하게 된다. 그렇게 발견된 순간들은 우리의 존재를 더 풍요롭고 단단하게 만든다. 

 나는 일상에서 흔히 마주치는 장면들을 재구성함으로써, 그 안에 숨겨진 사유의 씨앗을 작품에 담고자 한다. 그리고 그 씨앗이 마음속 어딘가에 닿아 자라날 수 있도록, 색과 빛의 변주를 통해 평범한 일상에 숨어 있는 특별함을 보다 선명하게 드러내고자 한다. 

ABOUT

J RYU is a contemporary artist who breathes vitality into everyday life through the use of vibrant color. After spending eight years immersed in the bold hues of Mexico, she returned to Korea in 2019, only to be confronted by the muted tones of Seoul and the emotional distance brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. This stark contrast prompted her to reexamine the role of color in daily life and inspired her to infuse Korean urban landscapes with the vivid chromatic energy she encountered abroad. 

 For J RYU, color is more than a visual element—it is a dynamic, emotional force that shifts with light, environment, and human perception. Guided by this philosophy, she chooses colors intuitively, projecting emotion and intention onto the canvas. Her work can be seen as a contemporary reinterpretation of Post-Impressionist color theory, especially the use of complementary contrasts. Through her deliberate injection of color into mundane scenes, she invites viewers to rediscover joy and presence in the repetition of everyday life. 

 A graduate of Kookmin University with a degree in Visual Design, J RYU began her creative career as a Visual Merchandising Designer at DIOR, where she refined her design sensibilities over five years. Later, she moved to Mexico, where she absorbed a rich array of cultural influences while traveling the world. It was there that she formally began her art practice, studying traditional oil painting and participating in portrait sessions. Since returning to Korea in 2020, she has actively exhibited her work through solo and group exhibitions, as well as art fairs both domestically and internationally.

 J RYU는 일상에 색의 생동감을 불어넣는 작업을 통해, 우리가 무심히 지나치는 삶의 조각들에 새로운 감각과 시선을 부여하는 현대미술 작가입니다. 멕시코의 찬란한 색채 속에서 8년을 보낸 후, 2019년 한국으로 돌아온 그는 서울의 무채색 환경과 COVID-19 팬데믹으로 인한 거리감 속에서 ‘색’의 본질적 역할을 다시금 성찰하게 됩니다. 

 작가는 색이 단순한 시각적 요소를 넘어, 빛과 환경, 감정에 따라 끊임없이 변화하며 인식된다고 믿습니다. 이러한 철학은 후기 인상주의의 보색 대비 개념을 현대적으로 재해석하는 방식으로 이어지며, 색을 감정의 언어로 삼아 작품에 투영합니다. 반복되는 일상 속에 의도적으로 색을 개입시킴으로써, 그는 관람자에게 소소한 기쁨과 내면의 울림을 선사하고자 합니다. 

 국민대학교에서 시각디자인을 전공한 그는, 졸업 후 약 5년간 DIOR에서 VMD(Visual Merchandising Designer)로 활동하며 디자인적 감각을 다졌습니다. 이후 멕시코로 건너가 다양한 문화와 예술을 체험하며 전통 유화 기법을 익히고 인물화 세션에 참여하는 등 본격적인 작품 활동을 시작했습니다. 2020년 귀국 이후에는 개인전, 단체전, 아트페어 등 국내외에서 활발한 전시를 이어가며 자신만의 색채 세계를 확장해가고 있습니다.
