Artist's statement / 작가노트 

“The extraordinary is never far away.” 

It lingers quietly at the edges of our everyday lives. Even the smallest things—fleeting moments, forgotten objects, habitual gestures—carry their own meanings and stories.

The reflection of light in a glass, a drifting petal in the wind, a stopped clock, loosened shoelaces, a half-eaten apple—each is complete in itself, quietly telling a tale. 

 We often overlook these traces of life. But when we pause, look closer, and reflect, we begin to encounter the hidden depth of our existence. Such moments, once noticed, nourish us and make our being more whole. 

 Through my work, I seek to reconstruct familiar scenes from daily life, embedding them with seeds of contemplation. With shifting tones of light and color, I aim to illuminate the subtle wonders hidden in the mundane, so that the ordinary may once again feel extraordinary. 

“특별함은 결코 먼 곳에 있지 않다.” 

 그것은 우리가 살아가는 일상의 경계마다, 언제나 우리 곁에 조용히 머문다. 비록 그것이 사소하게 느껴질지라도, 모든 사물과 행동, 사건, 그리고 순간 속에는 나름의 가치와 의미가 깃들어 있다.

 투명한 잔에 반사된 빛, 바람에 흩날리는 꽃잎 한 장, 멈춰버린 시계의 초침, 느슨해진 신발끈, 한 입 남은 사과 조각—이 모든 것은 그 자체로 하나의 완결된 이야기를 담고 있다. 우리는 일상 속에서 이러한 작은 흔적들을 너무 쉽게 지나치곤 한다. 

그러나 그 사소함 앞에 잠시 멈춰 서서, 눈을 맞추고, 천천히 들여다보며 사유할 때, 비로소 삶의 깊이와 마주하게 된다. 그렇게 발견된 순간들은 우리의 존재를 더 풍요롭고 단단하게 만든다. 

 나는 일상에서 흔히 마주치는 장면들을 재구성함으로써, 그 안에 숨겨진 사유의 씨앗을 작품에 담고자 한다. 그리고 그 씨앗이 마음속 어딘가에 닿아 자라날 수 있도록, 색과 빛의 변주를 통해 평범한 일상에 숨어 있는 특별함을 보다 선명하게 드러내고자 한다. 

ABOUT

J RYU is a contemporary artist who intervenes with color in everyday scenes and objects, inviting viewers to reconsider the rhythms and sensations of daily life that are often unconsciously consumed. Her work begins with ordinary moments—flowers, vases, transparent cups, books, and figures using smartphones—but transforms familiar landscapes into unfamiliar experiences through vivid color and complementary contrasts. In her practice, color functions not as decoration but as a language that conveys emotion, perception, and states of time.

She studied Visual Communication Design at Kookmin University and worked for approximately five years as a Visual Merchandising Designer at DIOR, where she developed a keen sensitivity to space and imagery. She later lived in Mexico for eight years, where she began her painting practice in earnest, influenced by the country’s intense light and saturated colors. Through traditional oil painting techniques and figurative painting sessions, she established a solid painterly foundation. After returning to Korea in 2019, she began to reflect more deeply on the emotional and existential role of color within the context of Seoul’s monochromatic urban environment and the social distancing brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her recent work, J RYU focuses on the transformation of daily life and human perception within a digital environment centered on the smartphone. Observing contemporary individuals who spend most of their day engaged with small screens, she likens herself to a “cyborg,” exploring the blurred boundaries between technology and the body, reality and the virtual, through painting and installation. At the same time, she recalls slow objects such as cassette tapes, printed books, and knitting, questioning whether we truly wish to return to the past itself or merely consume its illusion.

J RYU’s work invites moments of pause and contemplation in an age of rapidly consumed images, foregrounding the significance of slow processes, materiality, and the act of looking. Through painting, installation, and video, she continues to explore perception, memory, and the textures of everyday life in the digital age. 

J RYU 작가는 일상 속 장면과 사물에 색을 개입시키며, 우리가 무심히 소비해온 삶의 리듬과 감각을 다시 바라보게 하는 작업을 한다. 꽃, 화병, 투명한 컵, 책, 스마트폰을 사용하는 인물 등 일상의 평범한 순간에서 출발하지만, 선명한 색채와 보색 대비를 통해 익숙한 풍경을 낯설게 전환한다. 색은 그의 작업에서 단순한 장식이 아니라, 감정과 인식, 시간의 상태를 드러내는 하나의 언어로 기능한다.

 국민대학교에서 시각디자인을 전공한 그는 졸업 후 약 5년간 DIOR에서 VMD로 활동하며 공간과 이미지에 대한 감각을 다졌다. 이후 멕시코에서 8년간 거주하며 강렬한 빛과 색채의 환경 속에서 회화 작업을 본격적으로 시작했고, 전통적인 유화 기법과 인물화 세션을 통해 회화적 기반을 확립했다. 2019년 한국으로 돌아온 후 서울의 무채색 도시 풍경과 COVID-19 팬데믹으로 인한 사회적 거리감 속에서 ‘색’이 지닌 정서적·존재론적 역할을 다시 성찰하게 된다.

최근 작업에서 작가는 스마트폰을 중심으로 한 디지털 환경 속에서 변화한 인간의 일상과 감각에 주목한다. 하루의 대부분을 작은 화면과 함께 보내는 현대인의 모습에서 스스로를 ‘사이보그’에 비유하며, 기술과 신체, 현실과 가상의 경계가 흐려진 상태를 회화와 설치로 풀어낸다. 동시에 카세트테이프, 종이책, 뜨개질과 같은 느린 물건들을 호출하며, 우리가 정말로 되돌아가고 싶은 것은 과거 그 자체인지, 아니면 그에 대한 환상인지 질문한다. 

J RYU의 작업은 빠르게 소비되는 이미지의 시대 속에서 잠시 멈춰 서서 바라보는 행위, 그리고 손으로 만들고 색을 입히는 느린 과정의 의미를 환기시킨다. 그는 회화와 설치, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며, 디지털 시대를 살아가는 우리의 감각과 기억, 그리고 일상의 풍경을 지속적으로 탐구하고 있다.
